Functions Of A Mammalian Skeleton

A mammalian skeleton has many functions such as for support, protection, locomotion, production and storage.

For support

The skeleton provides a rigid framework for the body, supports the weight of the body, and maintains the shape of the body.

For protection

The skeleton protects the internal organs from injuries. The cranium protects the brain, the vertebral column protects the spinal cord, and the rib cage protects the lungs and the heart.

For locomotion

The skeleton provides a surface for the attachment of muscles, ligaments and tendons, altogether form a system which allows movement.

For production

Red bone marrow is the site for the production of blood cells.

For storage

Yellow bone marrow is the site for the storage of fat. The skeleton serves as a calcium reservoir.
